The first annual Frederick Out of the Darkness Community Walk is scheduled for Oct. 8 at Star Square (9th and Grand streets). On-site registration will start at 5 p.m.
The walk will start at 5:30 p.m. with continued events till 7:00 pm. The walk route is approximately 2.4 miles. Participants can now register as an individual, or as a team by visiting the Frederick Community Walk website at www.afsp.org/frederickok. Individuals are encouraged to “Like” the Walk’s Facebook event page at www.facebook.com/events/1612605402388258/?ti=cl where continuing information will be posted.
All proceeds from the walk will help support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s or AFSP local and national educational and advocacy program. AFSP funds research aimed at improving our understanding of suicide and ways to prevent it as well as educational programs to increase awareness about prevention, warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses that can lead to suicide.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and the eighth leading cause of death overall in Oklahoma, yet suicide is preventable.
