The body of a man was found in Tillman County, according to Tillman County Sheriff Bobby Whittington.
“The body was found on County Road 180, approximately a mile and a half west of Highway 183,” Whittington said. “We called for assistance from Altus PD in case it was connected to their homicide case.”
Whittington said the body was found by farm hands.
“A couple farm hands were moving equipment and just happened to see where it was at,” Whittington said.
A spokesperson for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said OSBI was on scene to assist with the crime scene but the investigation belongs to the Altus Police Department.
Police Chief Tim Murphy of the Altus Police Department said the victim has been identified as their shooting victim.
“He has been identified as our shooting victim here in Altus, the homicide investigation that we’re conducting, as Jared Holmes,” Murphy said.
According to a press release sent out from the Altus Police Department, the victim’s body was transported to the office of the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner in Oklahoma City where he was positively identified as 32-year-old Jared Allen Holmes.
Investigators believe 24-year-old Marielle Trey Smith is responsible for the shooting death. Investigators searched a home in the 400 block of North Julian on Aug. 21 and discovered evidence that a shooting took place at this location.
Police believe the shooting took place sometime Sunday night after area residents heard what sounded like gunfire coming from the home at around 9 p.m. The motive behind the shooting is unclear at this point but investigators believe the suspect shot and killed the victim. Investigators and family members of the victim have not had contact with the victim since the evening of Aug. 20.
Smith is described as a black male, 5 ft. 6 in. tall, weighing approx. 200 lbs. Smith has numerous tattoo’s on both arms, chest and back along with a tattoo the left side of his neck.
Altus police were notified Tuesday afternoon that a car belonging to Smith was located in Lawton. That vehicle, a 2007 White Dodge Charger, was transported back to Altus to be processed by investigators.
Police are still looking for a 2002 Black Chevy Tahoe, which belongs to the victim. Police are still searching for the murder suspect. Smith is wanted on a Jackson County arrest warrant for second Degree Murder.
