General Sherman gifts City of Savannah to President Lincoln

The following is a telegram sent from General Sherman to President Lincoln on Dec. 22, 1964: SAVANNAH, GA., December 22, 1864 (Via Fort Monroe 6.45 p.m. 25th) His Excellency President LINCOLN: I beg to present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, and also about 25,000 bales of cotton.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

I’m not one to pick up magazines every time I visit a checkout line, but every now and then a cover grabs my attention. Halfway hidden behind a People Magazine was another that I could tell featured Santa. It was LIFE, with a great big photo of Santa on the Cover. I grabbed it on a whim as the cashier was finishing up with my groceries. I could hardly wait to get home to begin reading it.

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony premiers in Vienna

Da-da-da-DUM! One of the most well-known first movements in any symphony often needs no other words and anyone in the vicinity will name Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The nearly deaf composer spent about four years composing Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 6, from 1804-1808, before its fairly disastrous world premiere Dec. 22, 1808, at Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
