The Toys for Tots program began in 1947 with Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR. He founded Toys for Tots in Los Angeles, Calif. About 5,000 toys were collected and distributed to less fortunate children during a campaign before Christmas 1947. The first toy was a handcrafted doll made by his wife, Diane.
In 1948, the United States Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots and expanded it into a nationwide community action program and formally became the U. S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots Program. Marines at each Reserve Center throughout the nation conduct toy collection and distribution campaigns in the communities surrounding the center.
John Wayne, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra are just a few celebrities who endorsed the program.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Marine Toys for Tots. An IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity, it serves as the authorized fundraising and support organization for the Toys for Tots Program, according to toysfortots.org. The Foundation provides the leadership, funding, and support needed for successful annual toy collection and distribution campaigns.
Local campaigns are conducted annually in over 800 communities covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The Commander, Marine Forces Reserve has under his command over 150 Reserve Units located in 47 states. To cover all 50 states and more communities in each state, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation selects Local Community Organizations located in communities without a Marine Reserve Center, to conduct Toys for Tots Campaigns as part of the overall Marine Toys for Tots Program.
