Highway patrol investigating several Tillman County accidents

Two separate accidents occur within miles of each other in Tillman County on May 2, 2021.

According to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the first accident happened at about 8 p.m., approximately four miles north and 1.8 miles west of Manitou. Kenneth Mantooth, 60 of Tipton, was driving a 2020 Honda Grom Motorcycle traveling westbound on E1690 RD when he attempted to drive over ruts in the roadway, causing the motorcycle to over-turn. Tillman County EMS transported the driver to Comanche County Memorial Hospital where he was admitted in fair condition with trunk internal injuries.

The report states the cause of the accident was unsafe speed for the conditions.

Trooper Scott Hazel of the Kiowa County detachment of Troop M investigated the scene. Trooper Josh Tinsley of the Jackson County Detachment of Troop M, Manitou Fire Department, Tillman County Sheriff’s Office and Tillman County EMS assisted with the investigation.

The second accident occurred just after 9 p.m.

That accident sent a Manitou woman to the hospital in serious condition.

According to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Betty Lady, 62 of Manitou, was driving a Kia Sorento southbound in the northbound lanes on US 183, about two miles South of Manitou. The driver of a semi truck was driving northbound in the northbound lanes on US 183 when he swerved to the left to avoid the Sorento. Lady struck the semi truck in the rear duals.

Trooper Josh Tinsley transported Lady to Jackson County Memorial Hospital for a blood draw because she smelled of alcohol at the scene. During the hospital visit, she started complaining of pain. Lady was admitted into Jackson County Memorial Hospital then transferred to OU Medical in Oklahoma City, in serious condition with trunk internal and arm injuries.

The driver of the semi truck was uninjured.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Trooper Josh Tinsley of the Jackson County Detachment of Troop M investigated the scene. Trooper Scott Hazel and LT Steve Pothorst assisted with the investigation along with the Tillman County Sheriff’s Department, Fredrick Police Department, Fredrick Fire Department, and Tillman County EMS.

Another accident occurred on May 5, 2021, at about 5:30 a.m. on May 5, 2021, on US 183, approximately three miles South of Manitou.

Juan Lopez, 25 of Frederick, was driving a Ford F150 pickup truck Northbound on US-183 when he struck a pedestrian who was walking Northbound in the roadway. The pedestrian died at the scene and was transported by Southwest Mortuary to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Oklahoma City.

The Press-Leader isn’t naming the victim because it is unknown at this time if next of kin has been notified.

The condition of the driver and pedestrian are under investigation at this time.

Trooper Mitchell Witt of the of the Tillman County detachment of Troop M investigated the scene. Trooper Taylor Bunting and LT Ricky VanHorn assisted along with the Tillman County Sheriff’s Office, Tillman County EMS, Fredrick Fire Department, and ODOT.
