On this day in 1838, a newfangled thing called a telegraph machine was demonstrated for the first time. Samuel Morse demonstrated the telegraph machine at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, New Jersey Jan. 6, 1838. The telegraph revolutionized long-distance communication, reaching the height of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s.
