In the U.S., 34 million people are food insecure and more than a quarter of them are children. While every community faces food insecurity, rural communities bear the heaviest burden with a lack of retail options for food.

On Tuesday, October 3, at 7 p.m., Justin Lenhart, curator at the Jim Thorpe Museum and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, will review “Path Lit by Lightning: The Life of Jim Thorpe.” The biography, released in 2022 and written by author David Maraniss, explores the colossal athletic skills of Oklahoma’s Jim Thorpe (Sac and Fox), who won gold medals in the decathlon and the pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. In this biography, the narrative of Thorpe’s successes follows the personal struggles he faced in his life.

In recent years, our nation has experienced an alarming spike in poor mental health that was exacerbated by COVID- 19 pandemic shutdowns. Sadly, too many Americans have faced symptoms of anxiety, depression or more. This Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is a critical reminder to take mental health seriously and promote a healthy and mindful lifestyle.

The University of Central Oklahoma will join more than 20 colleges and universities, from across the state and region, at the Latino College Fair from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Cantera Event Center, 1 SE 59th St., Suite E, Oklahoma City. The event is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, October 4, at 2 p.m., the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office will host a free webinar titled “Early Wichita Sites and Fortifications in Oklahoma,” presented by Dr. Richard Drass, emeritus professor at the University of Oklahoma. He will discuss archaeology at Bryson-Paddock and Longest, two early-historic Wichita sites.

Individuals from all walks of life who want to enter the teaching profession are encouraged to attend “CU Become a Teacher,” a virtual workshop that will present the multiple pathways to becoming a certified teacher.
